11 receivers in Div 2 who deserve more credit

11 receivers in Div 2 who deserve more credit

After reading one too many of Kevin’s offensive and laughable articles, I approached Jon about providing some new content for the site. (In all seriousness, I do appreciate Kevin’s straight talk in a world where people are too often afraid to speak their minds. I know a lot of people do, too.)

Now, let’s get to the action. There are a few great receivers in Div 2 who probably dont get enough credit. With this article I simply hope to shine a light on a bunch of hardworking dudes.

To clarify, this list will not include D1-calibre, elite WRs playing in Div 2. We already know that these players are well-known in the MFL and we won’t include them here. For me, that includes Alexandre Bresse (Petite Phoques), Jonathan Svetna (Deep Threats), Louis-Mathieu Dufour (OG Panthers), Andrew Grant (Nice TDs), Shawn Haney (Joey’s Haters), Marvin Steinberg (Honor Game) and a few more like Donavan Martel (Les Boys), who currently plays for Mcgill University. PS, Donavan, unreal profile pic. Love it.

Finally: If I left you off the list, just approach me at the field and let me know that I got it wrong!

Here’s my list of 11 receivers in Div 2 who deserve more credit:

11. Charles Rousseau-Bélanger, Les Petits Phoques

23 Receptions, 245 Yards, 5 TDs

Chuck is a baller. More than that, he lets his game do the talking. You don’t hear any talk from this guy on the field. He just makes plays.

I’ll take him off the list early because he’s a good Div 1 receiver and I’m trying to keep this list to true Div 2 guys.

I think a lot of people in the MFL are already aware that Chuck is a tall, fast, legitimate threat with great hands who excels on mid to deep level catches. However, I wanted to include him because he may be overshadowed at times playing on such a loaded Phoques receiving group.

This is also a testament to the Phoques’ recruiting efforts. On any given week you might see a different guy put up big numbers. Bresse is practically an MFL legend at this point, Boris Gagnier is a quick, explosive slot guy capable of turning it on, and just last week Étienne Maillé-Daviau had a big game against us. Longtime MFLer Vince Granata can put up big games too. It’s a difficult offense to stop.

10. Mike Dessin, Underdogs

28 Receptions, 328 Yards, 7 TDs

I don’t know too much about Mike Dessin. However, he’s put up good numbers this season for the Underdogs, a first-time team in Div 2 who lack the cohesion and group familiarity that many winning teams thrive off. Mike currently averages a trip to the endzone every game with seven TDs in seven games.

Guys around the league say that Mike has all the tools to be great but just needs to put it together and consistently catch the ball.

9. Maximilien Sadori, Joey’s Haters

48 Receptions, 492 Yards, 10 TDs

I’ll get my own guy off the list early so no one complains. We think that Max Sadori is perhaps the most underrated player in all of Div 2. He’s just such a valuable center for us, rarely drops balls and he’s a positive, easy personality to work with. I really do see a Div 1 future for Max Sadori, as I do with his close friend David Gutkovsky, who is another huge part of our team. I felt David should also be on this list, but I don’t want to be too biased.

Guys around the league say that Sadori is one of the most reliable targets to move the chains and deceptively quick for a larger guy. When he does have a rare drop, guys on the Haters are asking him if everything is alright.

8. Devin Daoust, Honor Game

46 Receptions, 303 Yards, 9 TDs

The Honor Game boys are so loud, it’s like I could already hear them yelling at me to include Devin. I need to include Devin if I’m talking about difference makers this year. At the center position he’s caught nearly 50 balls from his brother Dave, and he doesn’t drop too many of them.

Devin, like Dave, plays with an admirable intensity. He’s also there to chill Dave out when Dave gets too hot, and sometimes only a brother can play that role. I’d love to see how Devin does out of center, maybe in the slot position too, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the future.

7. Sébastien Béchard, D#Nasty

21 Receptions, 259 Yards, 4 TDs

Sébastien Béchard is a really likeable team player and I would 1000% have him on my team any day. Bech makes tons of plays and never says a word. He’s got that quiet personality on the field, kind of like a ‘lunch pail’ guy. He comes to work and gets the job done. This year it looks like Bech is off to a slower start in terms of TDs, but he’s putting up his biggest yards per catch of his MFL career. I’ve seen take over games when he’s really on and it’s fun to watch how much his teammates value him.

It’s been an up-and-down season for D#Nasty, but these guys come ready to play every Saturday and they don’t back down from anyone. With two games to go, they’re hunting for a playoff spot.

6. Aleksander Blostein, Deep Threats

42 Receptions, 310 Yards, 9 TDs

The friendly Aleksander Blostein is your prototypical quick, small slot receiver who picks up good YAC yardage once he gets the ball in his hands. He’s arguably made one of the biggest jumps from average player to scoring threat since coming into this league a few years ago. That’s not a shot, but rather another example of guys coming into our league at a younger age and growing into great players. Same with Svetna.

Guys around the league say Blostein has put the time in on improving his route running and catching, which has made him the clear second option on Deep Threats under Svetna. I know the Deep Threats feel they’re better than what their current record indicates. I also know that they’re a team who will be a contender in the future, and they’re only going to get harder to play against.

One quick note: Daniel Murray Jr. is having a terrific season at rusher, and in my opinion, might be the best rusher in Div 2 this year. Not only is he leading the league in sacks, but he’s also getting a few bat-downs.

5. Raphaël Constantin, Les Centurions

41 Receptions, 389 Yards, 9 TDs

What I appreciate most about Raphaël Constantin is his intensity. He’s a polite guy off the field, but on the field Raphaël is a force. You’re always aware of his presence because he’s always dialled in. He’s fast, tall and works his ass off for the entire game, making crucial catches. On defense, he puts the big effort in all over again. That’s a player you want on your team.

Raphaël is a dangerous threat on a loaded Centurions offense alongside Simon-Pierre Laferrière, who is having a huge season this year.

The Centurions also get a lot of production from the Collette brothers: Samuel, on offense, and Xavier, who I noticed is very quick at the corner position.

4. Nick Reeves, Old School

28 Receptions, 328 Yards, TDs: 10

Nick Reeves has a history of catching passes with big yards per catch. Or, to translate that, when you turn your head after Dahic launches a rocket in the air, it’s usually Nick who’s running under it for Old School. I similarly get that feeling of dread with Louis-Mathieu Dufour (OG Panthers). You turn around and you pray that your deep guy is there, because these dudes are burners. Then I get nightmares.

Despite playing two fewer games than other receivers this season, Nick is tied for the third-most TDs in Div 2 thus far. Guys around the league say Nick is sound defensively and possesses good speed and great hands.

3. Alexis Ferand, Les Petits Phoques

16 Receptions, 273 Yards, 6 TDs

I feel like it’s only a matter of time before Alexis Ferand is a regular in Div 1. Even while putting up a healthy 17 yards per catch for the Petits Phoques, Alexis might be an even better defender. He’s played both offense and defense in tackle football as a former CEGEP player, so he’s a valuable asset for the Phoques.

Guys around the league say Alexis is the best kept secret in the Gros Coqs farm system. He has the size and the hands to become a dominant player.

2. Simon-Pierre Laferrière, Les Centurions

51 Receptions, 520 Yards, 9 TDs

I couldn’t make this list without adding Simon-Pierre Laferrière, who is having a huge season in Div 2. He leads the division with 51 receptions after eight games. But Simon-Pierre might not be a secret because he already put up 730 yards and 16 TDs last fall season.

Simon-Pierre isn’t a particularly big guy, but he gets open well and has been on fire this year with former Université de Montréal Carabins QB Gabriel Archambault rifling him passes. Laferrière is another reason why this Centurions offense is so lethal this season.

If the Centurions can clean up their defense a bit (don’t we all need that), I think they’ll compete for a spot in the finals.

1. Kevin Bourbonais, Bitter Boys

39 Receptions, 527 Yards, 13 TDs

When Kevin Bourbonais caught four TDs and four interceptions two weeks ago, I had to look at the box score again. Who does that?

But Kevin just keeps making big plays for the Bitter Boys, the unquestioned top receiver in a group that also includes the reliable Vincent Naulet.

I imagine the Bitter Boys weren’t satisfied after starting the season with a 3-3 record, having come down from Div 1. It’s reasonable to suggest that Kevin has played a large role in the guys salvaging their season, now at 4-3 and hunting for a playoff seed. If they grab one of those spots, put your best guy on Kevin.

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 7

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 7

Predictions

It’s that time of the week again where I get to tell you who is going to walk away victorious. The last few weeks I’ve been slipping a little and now is the time to start getting them right again. Here are this week’s winners or at least how I see it.

Division 1 (2-0 LW, 10-4 Overall)

Gros Coqs vs Red Raiders

Last time these two teams met Red Raiders walked away with the win. This week it won’t happen. I feel Gros Coqs are more of a team and that is why they will win. If Red Raiders play like they did last week and not bitch at each other it will be a close game, if not expect to see a blowout.

Holy Trollers vs Henchmen NA

I don’t pick my games.

Division 2 (5-3 LW, 28-16 Overall)

Centurions vs Underdogs

Centurions win and get back on track. They are the better team and their defense is fantastic and will give Underdogs lots of problems.

D#Nasty vs Les Boys 2.0

This will be a close game, but with all the games that D#Nasty has been in that were close, they will pull it off. They have more experience to lean on and that will be the difference.

OG Panthers vs Old School

Roster wise, I think OG Panthers have the better roster and it comes down to how Charles plays. I just don’t think that OG Panthers will be able to keep Dahic away from getting a few picks and taking over this game by himself.

Joey’s Haters vs Bitter Boys

Joey’s Haters have the better roster and should be able to win even with Max not there. The matchup that I would keep an eye on is Haney vs Kevin as both guys have size, speed and can make tons of plays happen. Who will have more big plays and who plays QB for the Haters will determine the winner in this one.

Petits Phoques vs Nice TDs

This could be a finals preview. I have to go with Petit Phoques since I see them having the better roster from top to bottom. I also can see Kris getting a little frustrated with their defense and he hasn’t been playing great the last few weeks because of a certain little injury.

Deep Threats vs Honor Game

There is too much talent on this team for them not to win. The only way they lose this game is if they can’t keep it together and start bitching at one another.

Petits Phoques vs Bitter Boys

I have them beating Nice TDs so how can I see them losing this game? They have the more dynamic playmakers and will keep the undefeated season going.

Division 3 (2-1 LW, 15-7 Overall)

Raccoons vs Iron Wolves

After the beating Iron Wolves took last week, I can’t see them losing again this week. I would expect to see a full roster from them as they start to gear up for the playoffs.

Sriracha All Stars vs Ninja Turtles

Even after the week that Sriracha had last week and the great performance from their QB anyone who thinks I would pick them over Ninja Turtles needs to go to the doctors and have their heads examined. Ninja Turtles are the better team and it’s not even close.

Mustard Tigers vs Ninja Turtles

Both teams are solid teams and they might meet in the finals. I just see Ninja Turtles being able to turn it on and take over the game whenever they want. They have too many guys that can make big plays at any point.

Mustard Tigers vs Panaches

With all the experience this team has, they can’t lose this one. The only thing that might hold them back a little is the fact that it is their second game of the day and they are a little bit older and might wear down in the heat.

Division 4 (4-0 LW, 18-8 Overall)

Airborne vs Citadins

All anyone talks about is how Serge Pilon is on the team and how he is too good for the division. Yes, all that might be true, but even if he wasn’t there they would still win this game. Carol-Ann is a fabulous QB who doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, Jasmine is a stud receiver leading the division in catches and TDs and is also number two in yards and Simon is the best rusher in the division. So enough of, “oh, Serge is on the team it’s not fair”. (ed’s note: it sounds like you think the whole team shouldn’t be in the division, isn’t that more unfair?)

Flamboyant Flamingos vs Thunder Buddies

This is a rematch from last week. Thunder Buddies will win again, but by a bigger margin. I hope some of the Flamboyant Flamingos have fun camping this week while the rest of the team is out there having fun playing football.

Kill Bills vs Sofa King Good

They have the better team and their guys will show up. I’m not sure who Yann will be throwing to this week, but I doubt I know any of them. Sofa King Good will win, but not by as much as last week.

Sofa King Good vs Les Beautes

They are the better team or at least have the better QB. This is again a rematch from last week and if Les Beautes have any respect for themselves they won’t lose by the same amount as they did last week or I at least hope they won’t.

Power Rankings

This week lots of things happened and I had to make a few changes to my ranking as you can see below. Before I did my rankings, I figured that it was going to be very simple and I’d only make a change of two, but then I really looked at it and was like “fudge it”, so here are my rankings after 7 weeks of playing.

Division 1

#1) Gros Coqs

#2) Outlaws

#3) No one earned this spot (ed’s note: damn, ice cold)

Division 2

#1) Petits Phoques

#2) Joey’s Haters

#3) Nice TDs

Division 3

#1) Ninja Turtles

#2) Mustard Tigers

#3) Iron Wolves (close to being cut off the list) (ed’s note: that’s fair)

Division 4

#1) Citadins

#2) Sofa King Good

#3) No one earned this spot this week

There were loads of mismatches this week to go along with a bunch of blowouts. Yes, some of those games did affect my rankings. As you can see a few spots were not earned and are up for grabs. The Trollers threw up another duck and got bumped. I would have kicked both Nice TDs and Joey’s Haters off the list, but no one is even close to them in the standings. Iron Wolves showed me nothing and were close to getting kicked off, but they have been missing guys for a few games so they got a pass this week. The only ranking people should be caring about at this point are where they sit in the standings. With two weeks left there are still tons of games left to be played.

Word from the Mouth: Pick Up Your Trash! edition

Word from the Mouth: Pick Up Your Trash! edition

Another week down and only two weeks until playoffs. With all the new rules that we have had to put in place people are still forgetting them. Now, once again, here is a reminder that players are not allowed to spit on the field, players should not be walking between the fields once the fields are set up, and if you want to smoke it needs to be out of the fenced area. These are the rules and need to be followed by everyone and if not then there is a chance that we won’t be allowed to use the field, don’t be that person that ruins it for everyone.

The one thing that stills baffles me and we have been saying for years now is how people don’t clean up after themselves. We have already been warned about all the garbage that is left all over the field. If this doesn’t get fixed then the league might have to start charging teams a cleanup fee. Some teams might clean up their garbage, but that fee would be charged to every team. As you can see from this week’s photo, this is what was picked up at the end of just one day of games. Just follow the rules they are easy and simple.

Week 7 Recap - Division 4

Citadins vs Airborne (45-12)

What do I say about a game that was over half way through the first half? Even with Carol-Ann throwing four picks, Citadins still put up 45 points. I’m not sure the app would go to triple digits so we might have had to pull out the paper and start making notes. I don’t know if they will lose again this year, but if they do my bet it would be in a shootout. Guillaume did what he could with what he had, and on the bright side he was able to match Carol-Ann in number of picks thrown. Really, the way I see it is the Airborne still have work to be done, but the defense is playing their ass off and that’s a good sign.

Sofa King Good vs Kill Bills (50-13)

Kill Bills missing guys all over the place and that is the main reason why they are losing the way they are, and it is that reason or it could be Sam going 15 of 18 passing with six TDs. This could not have been a fun game for anyone involved including the refs. I hate to see teams run up the score, we aren’t in the NCAA where anyone really cares about where the writers place you in the top 25, here in the MFL to avoid teams running up the score as our tie breaker is points against. Sofa King Good should have taken it easy in the second half knowing that Kill Bills were shorthanded, it’s the gentlemen thing to do.

Thunder Buddies vs Flamboyant Flamingos (27-14)

I’ve been saying for weeks now that Flamboyant Flamingos are a good team and they just need to get a few things figured out. Before the game I was asked if Flamboyant Flamingos are still only playing man defense, which they aren’t. But after the game, Terry was saying he wished they played them a few weeks ago because they are a lot better than they were. Nick is a stud for Flamboyant Flamingos, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at him. They have a bigger roster but they rotate evenly so no one is left sitting on the bench. That’s what the MFL is about, coming together with friends, have some fun and maybe winning a few games. At one point, Rosalie had two sacks on back to back plays, so I had to ask was she going to make it three and force the punt all by herself and she responded that she would try and we will see all while smiling and having fun. This is the difference between the lower and top teams. Lower teams want to win as well, but having fun is just as important, whereas upper divisions are all about winning. Thunder Buddies are coming along right now and what needs to happen is Terry cutting down on his interceptions while throwing and if that happens then they might have a shot at the title, otherwise it’ll be first round elimination.

Les Beautes vs Sofa King Good (6-53)

Again, this was complete waste of everyone’s time as Sofa King Good should have made a switch at QB and tried something else, but not keep running up the score. I understand you want stats and that’s all anyone really cares about, but do you know how it makes you look by beating a team by 47 points. If this was the last game of the season and you needed to win and they had to give up a certain amount of points for you to get into the playoffs I could understand, but not at this point. Les Beautes were there most of the day so they get a pass this week, plus Simon was at the hospital all night with his new set of twins (congratulations) (ed’s note: that is the least congratulatory congratulations that I have ever read, and also: Congratulations, Simon!), but moving forward, no more excuses, just play better.

Top Performances of the Week

With just two weeks left in the regular season a lot of you busted your ass to become one of my three top performers of the week. This week I had lots of players to choose from and I had to leave a few guys that might have made it in other weeks. Here are my players for week 7.

Division 1

#1- Michael Roy (2 Games) 45 of 74 for 449 yards, 11 TDs, 3 1-point converts and 2 runs for 12 yards.

#2- Marvin Steinberg (2 Games) 10 catches for 223 yards, 4 TDs, 6 tackles and 5 picks.

#3- Vincent Granata 8 catches for 79 yards, 1 TD, 1 1-point convert and 2 tackles on defense.

Division 2

#1- Dahic Duhamel 21 of 32 for 186 yards, 5 TDs, 2 1-point converts, 2 catches for 6 yards, 1 TD, 3 runs for 18 yards, 4 tackles and 2 picks on defense.

#2- Simon-Pierre Laferriere (2 Games) 15 catches for 193 yards, 3 TD, 1 2-point convert, 6 tackles and 3 picks on defense.

#3- Andrew Grant (2 Games) 13 catches for 137 yards, 4 TDs, 1 run for 5 yards and 3 tackles on defense.

Division 3

#1- Josh Levine 20 of 34 for 186 yards, 6 TDs, 5 runs for 18 yards, 1 TD and 1 pick on defense.

#2- Serge Pilon 8 catches for 108 yards, 2 TDs and 7 tackles on defense.

#3- Brian Mustard 14 of 22 for 159 yards, 4 TDs and 2 1-point converts.

Division 4

#1- Sam laird (2 Games) 35 of 47 for 432 yards, 14 TDs, 7 1-point converts, 1 pick thrown, 6 runs for 14 yards, 1 tackle and 1 sack on defense.

#2- Simon Biedermann 6 catches for 90 yards, 3 TDs, 1 1-point convert, 1 2point convert, 2 tackles and 1 sack on defense.

#3- Stephen Harripersaud 6 catches for 28 yards, 2 TDs, 1 2-point convert and 2 tackles on defense.

This week we ended up with a lot of players playing in multiple games as you can see from the numbers. If I was to pick 1 player of the week this week that honor would go to Marvin Steinberg. I think the man played 5 games and killed it in all of them, but I don’t do that maybe I’ll go back to that next season. I’m sure there are a few players out there that feel they should have made my list this week and you might be right, but these are the guys I pick so you will have to do better this week and we will see if you make it next week.

Final Thoughts

We are coming to the final stretch and there is still a lot to play for. Right now, only a few teams have secured playoff spots and only a few have been knocked out. This is when everyone needs to show up and play their asses off. Yes, this is a game and we are here to have fun, but let’s also try our best out there.

I want to remind everyone that in the fall, Division 1 is getting mixed up and we will be doing a draft instead of the regular team format. This will give players a chance to play with different people and it will also allow other players to come up and play with stronger competition. It will also have a cash prize for the winning team. If you are interested, please contact Jon at info@montrealflagfootball.com and let him know if you need more information and take a look at the league's Facebook page. Last thing before I let you go, please remember to clean up after yourself! We are not the only ones using the field and we want to be able to keep using it.

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 6

Predictions and Power Rankings Week 6

Predictions

It’s that time of the week where I get to pull out my crystal ball and see who this week’s winners will be. I knew last week that by picking against at least one team it was going to come back and bite me in the ass and it did. Hopefully it doesn’t happen too much, but with everyone hating on me picking against them then who knows what might happen (ed’s note: Again, this is not why people hate on you, Kev). Now let’s get to my picks this week.

Division 1 (0-1 LW, 8-4 Overall)

Red Raiders vs Holy Trollers NA

You can jump to whatever conclusions you want, but I will never pick my teams game.

Red Raiders vs Henchmen

Both teams are a little disorganized and it was a real close toss up, but I went with Red Raiders as they need it more to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

Les Gros Coqs vs Outlaws

I wanted to go with Outlaws, but I would much rather see a tie for the division lead. I also have to believe that Gros Coqs have figured Steve and the Outlaws out and at least this season have their number.

Division 2 (3-3 LW, 23-13 Overall)

Nice TDs vs Centurions

I think this week they stop the slide and get the win. Overall, they are a better team. The defense will need to step up and shut Andrew down in order to win.

Centurions vs Deep Threats

They are a better team at every position and will only need to stop Svetna in order to win. This will be a lop-sided victory for them.

Underdogs vs Old School

I think either team could win this one, but I have to lean towards Old School based on chemistry, but it will be a really close one.

Nice TDs vs Honor Game

Both teams are going to be tired as most of them will be playing 1 or 2 games before this. I think Honor game is the better team overall and I want to lean towards them, but I figure that there is a chance they self-implode and that will cost them the game.

Joey’s Haters vs Les Petits Phoques

This is a matchup that we might see in the finals. Both teams are super talented and it was a hard pick, but I went with the Haters to win only because of the stipulations that Petits Phoques have to play with.

D#Nasty vs Bitter Boys

This one will be won by who wants it more. Both teams are fighting for a playoff spot. I just feel that D#Nasty will find a way to get it done this week.

Les Boys 2.0 vs OG Panthers

OG Panthers should win this one easily based on the rosters. This will depend on how Charles plays. Les Boys 2.0 have a few good players and might be able to pull off the upset if they play the way they can.

Bitter Boys vs Les Boys 2.0

Bitter Boys will win and it won’t be close. I think the addition of Kevin to Bitter Boys was huge and he will have a big impact in this game.

Division 3 (2-1 LW, 13-6 Overall)

Ninja Turtles vs Raccoons

I can’t see how they lose this game. They have the better roster at every position and with the Pilon brothers this would be a huge upset if they lost.

Panaches vs Sriracha All Star

In the rematch from last week I still having going to Panaches. Last week Sriracha All Stars were lucky and got a huge break with Panaches losing their QBs.

Iron Wolves vs Mustard Tigers

This will be the best game in the division. Both teams are very similar with what they do. I just think that Mustard Tigers have a slight edge and will pull out the victory by a close margin.

Division 4 (2-2 LW, 14-8 Overall)

Citadins vs Airborne

This was an easy pick. After last week’s loss, Citadins is going to come out on fire and win hands down and by a lot.

Sofa King Good vs Kill Bills

Sofa King Good is the better team and it’s not even close. The biggest issue I have with Kill Bills is you never know who is going to show up and play.

Thunder Buddies vs Flamboyant Flamingos

It might seem like an easy pick, but Flamboyant Flamingos have gotten better each week and they also have a bunch of decent athletes. I see this one being a close game, but Thunder Buddies will pull it off even if they need to get a sub to help (lol).

Les Beautes vs Sofa King Good

Sofa king Good is the better team from top to bottom. What really hurts Les Beautes chances is that their QB most likely won’t be there and that would mean Brian will be throwing and that takes away their best playmaker on the outside.

Power Rankings

We only have a few weeks left in the season and things are starting to play themselves out. These might be my rankings, but that doesn’t really mean bupkis once playoffs come around. How many times have you seen the top teams lose in sports before? Here are my rankings for this week.

Division 1

#1) Gros Coqs

#2) Outlaws

#3) Holy Trollers

Division 2

#1) Joey’s Haters

#2) Petits Phoques

#3) Nice TDs

Division 3

#1) Ninja Turtles

#2) Iron Wolves

#3) Mustard Tigers

Division 4

#1) Citadins

#2) Sofa King Good

#3) Airborne

Some teams and players might feel like I’m disrespecting them. I guess it sucks for them, but they have two choices: play better and get some wins or reach out to me and explain why or how I got it wrong. If you take the second option and come talk to me, you better have points and facts to back up your argument and then at the end of all that I will think about it, but the chances of me changing are slim to none. If your team is 1-7 and you just won your first game and ask why you’re not ranked, remember you are 1-7.

Word from the Mouth: Getting Drafted! edition

Word from the Mouth: Getting Drafted! edition

We made it through another week and it was a good one with a bunch of exciting games. This week we had two teams get their first win of the season and I just wonder how much partying took place afterwards.

We are getting close to the fall season and this year we want to try something a little different. Every season in the fall our division 1 loses a few teams and it just isn’t interesting to play since it always comes down to the same teams. This year we have a few ideas to try and fix this and here are a few options we have come up with.

Option 1 is that we split up a few of the better teams by taking a player or two off the roster and making a new team as well as bumping up a few of the better division 2 teams.

Option 2 would be to do a draft where anyone would be able to enter into and then captains which would most likely be the QBs would get to pick their players in a snake order. To get players interested in join a draft the season winner would win a cash prize. We would love to hear what you guys all think and if you want in on the draft let us know and we can sign you up and give you the details.

Week 6 Recap - Division 4

Citadins vs Sofa King Good (16-20)

When I saw this score I had to check it again to see that what I was seeing was real. Finally, someone has beaten Citadins and, yes, Sofa King Good had a sub in Marvin, but Sam played well and did enough to help get the win. Citadins are still going to finish number one, but it shows that they are beatable. Serge killed it for Citadins and I’m sure if Marvin wasn’t there, he might have done even more damage.

Kill Bills vs Flamboyant Flamingos (0-25)

It was the first win of the year, sorry first win in team history, for Flamboyant Flamingos. This was a really ugly game for Yann. If you include the two pick 6s that he threw, then he had two TD passes. Kill Bills came out missing players and being disorganized and you could tell that it wasn’t going to be their day. All day Yann wasn’t able to get the ball past Daniel who had a few batted balls plus he was the big reason for the two pick 6s. All the scoring was done in the first ten minutes of the game. After that it was a back and forth game with each team not doing too much with the ball. This week I reached out to Dimitri to give a few pointers as I never want to see a new team come in and struggle and he said that it helped. What I like about Flamboyant Flamingos is that they know they are a new team and they strive to get better and that’s why they try to get together once a week to practice and it is finally paying off for them. Good job and I hope you guys partied hard on Saturday night.

Thunder Buddies vs Airborne (20-13)

Thunder Buddies were missing a player or two, so Will subbed in and I don’t like it, but it was approved by the Commissioner so it was allowed. Thunder Buddies got up two scores at half and then when they began the second half, they pretty much ended any hope of a comeback from Airborne with another score. On the TD in the second half I was told it was a pass for Nick on a streak that was somehow caught by Rosalie on a post and she then took it the rest of the way for the score. After the game I asked Terry what happened and why it was so close and he said that they got up early and then stopped playing hard. In games like this is when you want to try new things and see if they work and give players the chance to try something that they normally wouldn’t, again that’s just how I feel, you should never take it easy because that is when players get hurt.

Kill Bills vs Les Beautes (19-28)

Yann had a way better game this time around, really, he couldn’t have played worse. He started the game with a huge catch and run to Kevin to start the scoring and they even hooked up on the convert. It looked like Kill Bills were going to make it a game and they did. It was back and forth all game. This week for Les Beautes, Simon was throwing and you could see that it made a big difference. With Brian on the outside he can get the ball in his hands more and make things happen. I know that this is division 4, but guys really need to know what is going on in the game and all the situations. With just over a minute left in the game, Simon hits Ben on a short route and he makes a few guys miss and goes in and scores. What he should have done was go out at the one and end the game. They are now up seven points and I explain what is going on and they were about to go for one then switched to two which they got and went up by nine. Being up by seven with a little over a minute you have to go for two to end the game.

Top Performances of the Week

Last week I had a bunch of players to pick from and the same goes for this week. We had a few teams play twice, so if you did play twice, but didn’t kill it in one game and just had average numbers in both, don’t be looking too hard for your name because the likelihood of you making are slim.

That is who made it this week. Good luck to everyone next week and keep playing hard and you could be here next week.

Final Thoughts

Only a few weeks left in the season before we reach the playoffs. It should be an exciting last few weeks with so many teams on the bubble. A few teams are locked in, but seeding will play a big factor as to who will win it all. That will be the case for at least the top two divisions. If I had to pick the winners right now, I’d have to go Gros Coqs division 1, Joey’s Haters division 2, Ninja Turtles division 3, and Citadins Division 4, but from now to the finals a lot can happen and that is why we play the game. I know that in other leagues, teams stop showing up or playing hard once they are eliminated, but here in the MFL we want you to play your asses off and be the spoiler. Let’s go out have fun and be safe. It’s only a game we are playing and we all have things to do outside of football.
