Word from the Mouth: Winter is Over! edition

Word from the Mouth: Winter is Over! edition

I have been sitting here staring at the blank screen trying to figure out how I to start the last winter article of the season. I went with just writing and seeing where it went. I wonder how many people actually take a few minutes out of their day to read what I am writing.

I hope people were able to watch the Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker fight last night. Out of all the UFC I’ve watched recently it was by far the best one I’ve seen. All that was missing was a finish. I hate when it goes to the judges. Finish it in the five rounds or keep going. Back in the old days guys would fight twice in a night and be crowned that UFC champ (ed’s note: How old are you?). It was different when guys were only skilled in one type of fighting so some of the fights were bad, but now the guys and girls specialize in one are, but can also do a bit of everything.

Just like the UFC the MFL has evolved and you have to be able to do bits of everything. No more are you winning being a one trick pony.

Division 1 Recap

Les Boys vs Henchmen (7-20)

I didn’t get to see this game, but I was able to catch and hear a few things that went on. First, I didn’t see Fred there and when he is your snapper and top target for Hugo you know there are going to be problems. I would have expected to see a few muffed snaps, but I didn’t. This game was close up until halftime where Jon just wore the clock down and only allowed Les Boys one possession in the second half. This is what Jon does, he gets a little lead and then doesn’t make a mistake and all of a sudden the game is over. After the game I was told Henchmen had the ball inside the red zone when the game was ended with five plays left.

Joey’s Lovers vs Petits Phoques (28-27) OT

This was the first time of the year that Petits Phoques had their entire twelve player roster and I was wondering what they would do for a rotation. It didn’t take long to see that they were playing an offense and a defense. The defense was stacked beyond belief and the offense was not on the same level. To start the game Steve didn’t have a problem marching down and scoring easily. Once Petit Phoques got the ball on the first play Dom took off for twenty-nine yards leaving a slew of defenders grabbing air. It looked as if this was going to be a long game for both defenses. Joey’s lovers figured out how to contain Dom and force him to throw by getting two sacks on the next few plays. Petits Phoques turned the ball over and Joey’s lovers went in to score taking a two score lead and looking to run away with it. Dom threw a beautiful pass to Boris for a score with two plays left and brought them right back in the game. Second half comes and both teams are matching scores. When Joey’s Lovers scored to go up seven with five plays left I was baffled when they went for one to go up eight and still leaving a sliver of hope for Les Petits Phoques. All it took was an incomplete pass and a forth five yard bomb to Alex to put them within a two point convert of tying the game. On the convert Joey’s Lovers blew it by playing the defense they did. They lined up and dropped three yards into the end zone and Dom looked around and broke the rusher and took off towards the goal line where he gets flagged a yard in. Now we head to overtime and Petits Phoques decide to start on offense and failed giving Joey’s Lovers a chance to go for one where Steve hits Vince and just like that the game was over.

Finals

Joey’s Lovers vs Henchmen (18-12)

This was not the matchup I was expecting to see, but it was a good one and of course there were some questionable calls. Steve was able to have his way with Henchmen in the first half at least, where he threw four TDs, but only three of them were to his team. On their opening drive, Joel picked the ball off and gave Henchmen their only points of the first half. Second half Henchmen figured out how to stop Joey’s Lovers and started to play some offense. Since both Jon and Steve depend on short precise passes it was a matter of if there was enough time for Henchmen to mount a comeback. Jon was able to get the ball back down six with five plays left. On the first play Jon threw it back to Kris who was looking to throw, but took off running for nine yards. Now is where the questionable call comes in to play. Why would Jon throw it deep on the next two plays which were incomplete when you need one yard and the defense was playing soft. On fourth down Jon connected with Will and with last play coming up Jon throws it up for Kris in the back of the end zone, but the catch is made out of bounds and the game is over and Joey’s Lovers are champions.

Final Thought

After six long months we made it to the end of the season and got to crown two new champions. I want to thank everyone for making the season as great as it was. Winter season is over and next week we start our spring season. Anyone who has played in the different seasons knows there is a different feel to it and it seems to be more intense on the outdoor field on the grass. If you want to play in the spring there might be a few spots left, but you might want to reach out to Jon quickly. Thank you all again and hope to see you out there doing what you do and enjoying the game we all love.

Winter Playoffs in June!

Winter Playoffs in June!

Predictions Division 1

This week we will be finishing off the winter season, plus we also have the last regular season game to play. I’m going to jump right to it and tell you who is going to win the scheduled game and I’ll even tell you who is going to win it all.

D#Nasty vs Ataboy

I won’t spend long with this game since it might not even happen. I went with D#Nasty for no other reason than Ataboy hasn’t shown up the last two weeks and I doubt they will show up this week as well.

Les Boys vs Henchmen

Jon might not be happy about this one, but I picking Les Boys to win. I just feel that after the last few weeks they have learnt a thing or two and will take control of this game from start to finish. I think both teams are pretty evenly matched with Henchmen I’m not sure of who they will have to fill out their roster. I really hope Les Boys will be smarter this week and have Max rush the entire game. I’m taking Les Boys to win by two scores. Ya, I know they have lost to Henchmen twice already but three times isn’t happening.

Joey’s Lovers vs Petits Phoques

I really wanted to go with Joey’s Lovers, but I just couldn’t do it. Petits Phoques have a better roster overall and Joey’s Lovers are always looking for an extra players each week. At this point of the season bring in new players won’t do anything but hurt your chances. Look at what happened last week, guys were running wrong routes and trying to make plays. This game will be tight and come down to who makes fewer mistakes. With Dom being able to run like he can he will be able to pick apart Joey’s Lovers defense as they won’t stay disciplined. Give me Petits Phoques by a convert.

My Finals Prediction

If my picks above are right we will end up with Petits Phoques vs Les Boys. At first I was leaning towards Les Boys then I remembered what happened during the season way back in week four when Les Boys won by six points and Petits Phoques were missing a bunch of players, but Dom said he would make them pay and there is no better way to make them pay then by beating them in the finals. If this is the finals give me Petits Phoques by double digits. There you have it, your 2020 winter champs Petits Phoques.

Final Thoughts

Here we are in the last weekend of the season and its playoff time. Who would have thought we would actually get to this point in June? I know we had that long layoff and teams came back rusty or not at all, but we are here and now it’s time to crown some new champions. This week it will be hot again so you should bring plenty of water because a few of you will be playing two games. This is where I normally tell you to play safe and have fun, but fudge that! It’s playoffs and playing safe might cost you, so go out give it you all and leave it all out on the field Saturday. Good Luck to everyone this week see you out there.

Word from the Mouth: Winter is Almost Over! edition

Word from the Mouth: Winter is Almost Over! edition

We have finally reached the end of the season with one game left, and it’s about time. Last week was a scorcher at 33 plus degrees; I hope we don’t have to many more of those this summer. I want to remind everyone that this week we will be playing at our home field in St-Henri at park Le Ber. It’s a grass field that even with all the fixing up Jon and myself did in April won’t be the same as we have played on the last two weeks. Let’s congratulate all the teams that made the playoffs, if you want to win the title you will have to win twice this week.

Division 1 Recap

Henchmen vs Les Boys (26-20)

The last few games haven’t gone Les Boys way and a lot of that is brought on by themselves. Last week it was poor clock management and dropped balls, this week it was not knowing the rule on defense about covering the center (1 yard off to the side or 3 yards in front) they were warned three times about this and flagged twice which hurt them in the end. The one I don’t understand was not having their regular rusher rush the first half. When they made the adjustment at rush in the second half they played better. With all that out of the way let me get to the game and what I say and remember. The two plays that stand out to me was the last play of the half for Henchmen Jon takes the snap throws it backwards to Kris who heaves it from the right all the way to the front left side of the end zone where its caught for a touchdown. The defense was there, but they just mistimed the jump. The other play was the last play of the game where Les Boys needed to score to win the game. Fred snaps the ball back to Hugo who then throws it backwards to Dominic who then gets sacked. I understand that it was the last play and you need to get the ball to the end zone or at least close, but Hugo has a way stronger arm. I would have done it where Dominic got the snap and threw it to Hugo it would have given them a better shot at it. Ian got the sack and the game was over.

Henchmen vs Ataboy (14-21)

I’m not talking about this game since it really wasn’t these two teams, it was Henchmen vs Honor Game from division 2 plus Dave. Henchmen had already locked up first place and made no difference to them so they played what was basically a pickup game.

Joey’s Lovers vs Petit Phoques (19-26)

After looking over the stats I’m wondering how Joey’s Lovers blew a 19-6 halftime lead. I figured it out Steve wanted to throw as many touchdowns to the Petits Phoques as Dom did, mission accomplished with a few pick sixes. I was speaking to a few players after the game from Joey’s Lovers and you could tell they didn’t know what to say about that loss. With all the players that they have they should have kept it up in the second half and easily walked away with the win. The entire second half collapse can’t be all on Steve, guys have to catch the ball and run the right routes they are told to and they might not want to play a game or two before their game. I’m not saying that Petits Phoques couldn’t have pulled it off especially with a roster as loaded as theirs, but Joey’s Lovers just made it easy for them. They will be playing again this week and I expect to see a better game offensively from both teams.

Predictions from the Mouth and Playoff Scenarios

Predictions from the Mouth and Playoff Scenarios

Division 1 Predictions

Last week was a tough week for me as I went 1 for 2. I don’t count the game that got switched even though I would have picked Joey’s Lovers to win. Now that teams have been back and played a game it makes it easier for me to make my picks, which you will see this week as I expect to go perfect. So, teams I pick don’t let me down.

Henchmen vs Les Boys

I said last week that they would split their games and since Henchmen won last time I have to go with Les Boys. I feel that after getting the rust off last week this time they will be crisp, fresh, and ready to get back in the win column. There is no way Les Boys can go into the playoffs on a three game losing streak and expect to win it all and that is why I have them winning. Plus, I have some inside info as to who will not be there this week for Henchmen.

Henchmen vs Ataboy

This is an easy one, Henchmen all the way. Ataboy is out matched everywhere in this one. The only way Ataboy pulls this off is if Henchmen decide to not play. I am also not sure of who will show up for Ataboy since every week it’s a bunch of different guys. Ataboy will have to wait until next week to try and get their first victory of the year.

Joey’s Lovers vs Petits Phoques

I’m picking Petit Phoques to win this one because I think if their whole roster shows up that they are faster and more athletic from top to bottom, plus Dom can run all day on them whenever he chooses to. Joey’s Lovers used all their luck on beating a top team last week and it will run out and they will fall back to reality as an average team.

Playoff Scenarios Top 2 Spots

With one week left so much can still happen I was going to break it all down for you, but with all that can happen and all the possible tie breaker scenarios I have only done the top two spots. Jon might add to this or you can go in and figure it out for yourself and I hope you have fun with that.

- Henchmen lock up top spot with a win in either of their last two games

- Les Boys will lock up second place if they win this week and if Petits Phoques win

- Petits Phoques can lock up second place with a win and a Les Boys loss

- Joeys Lovers can lock up second place with a win
