Word from the Mouth: Winter is Over! edition
I have been sitting here staring at the blank screen trying to figure out how I to start the last winter article of the season. I went with just writing and seeing where it went. I wonder how many people actually take a few minutes out of their day to read what I am writing.
I hope people were able to watch the Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker fight last night. Out of all the UFC I’ve watched recently it was by far the best one I’ve seen. All that was missing was a finish. I hate when it goes to the judges. Finish it in the five rounds or keep going. Back in the old days guys would fight twice in a night and be crowned that UFC champ (ed’s note: How old are you?). It was different when guys were only skilled in one type of fighting so some of the fights were bad, but now the guys and girls specialize in one are, but can also do a bit of everything.
Just like the UFC the MFL has evolved and you have to be able to do bits of everything. No more are you winning being a one trick pony.
Division 1 Recap
Les Boys vs Henchmen (7-20)
I didn’t get to see this game, but I was able to catch and hear a few things that went on. First, I didn’t see Fred there and when he is your snapper and top target for Hugo you know there are going to be problems. I would have expected to see a few muffed snaps, but I didn’t. This game was close up until halftime where Jon just wore the clock down and only allowed Les Boys one possession in the second half. This is what Jon does, he gets a little lead and then doesn’t make a mistake and all of a sudden the game is over. After the game I was told Henchmen had the ball inside the red zone when the game was ended with five plays left.
Joey’s Lovers vs Petits Phoques (28-27) OT
This was the first time of the year that Petits Phoques had their entire twelve player roster and I was wondering what they would do for a rotation. It didn’t take long to see that they were playing an offense and a defense. The defense was stacked beyond belief and the offense was not on the same level. To start the game Steve didn’t have a problem marching down and scoring easily. Once Petit Phoques got the ball on the first play Dom took off for twenty-nine yards leaving a slew of defenders grabbing air. It looked as if this was going to be a long game for both defenses. Joey’s lovers figured out how to contain Dom and force him to throw by getting two sacks on the next few plays. Petits Phoques turned the ball over and Joey’s lovers went in to score taking a two score lead and looking to run away with it. Dom threw a beautiful pass to Boris for a score with two plays left and brought them right back in the game. Second half comes and both teams are matching scores. When Joey’s Lovers scored to go up seven with five plays left I was baffled when they went for one to go up eight and still leaving a sliver of hope for Les Petits Phoques. All it took was an incomplete pass and a forth five yard bomb to Alex to put them within a two point convert of tying the game. On the convert Joey’s Lovers blew it by playing the defense they did. They lined up and dropped three yards into the end zone and Dom looked around and broke the rusher and took off towards the goal line where he gets flagged a yard in. Now we head to overtime and Petits Phoques decide to start on offense and failed giving Joey’s Lovers a chance to go for one where Steve hits Vince and just like that the game was over.
Finals
Joey’s Lovers vs Henchmen (18-12)
This was not the matchup I was expecting to see, but it was a good one and of course there were some questionable calls. Steve was able to have his way with Henchmen in the first half at least, where he threw four TDs, but only three of them were to his team. On their opening drive, Joel picked the ball off and gave Henchmen their only points of the first half. Second half Henchmen figured out how to stop Joey’s Lovers and started to play some offense. Since both Jon and Steve depend on short precise passes it was a matter of if there was enough time for Henchmen to mount a comeback. Jon was able to get the ball back down six with five plays left. On the first play Jon threw it back to Kris who was looking to throw, but took off running for nine yards. Now is where the questionable call comes in to play. Why would Jon throw it deep on the next two plays which were incomplete when you need one yard and the defense was playing soft. On fourth down Jon connected with Will and with last play coming up Jon throws it up for Kris in the back of the end zone, but the catch is made out of bounds and the game is over and Joey’s Lovers are champions.
Final Thought
After six long months we made it to the end of the season and got to crown two new champions. I want to thank everyone for making the season as great as it was. Winter season is over and next week we start our spring season. Anyone who has played in the different seasons knows there is a different feel to it and it seems to be more intense on the outdoor field on the grass. If you want to play in the spring there might be a few spots left, but you might want to reach out to Jon quickly. Thank you all again and hope to see you out there doing what you do and enjoying the game we all love.
