Word from the Mouth: Jon Lost a Bet! edition

Here we are after another lovely weekend of football. I want to start by saying no one is perfect. I watched a bit of the XFL game on Saturday and they blew it for Seattle. How can a game end with 2 seconds left in any game, but a 9 point game where the team would get the ball on the opponents 22 yard line? I mean even Jon could get the ball to the end zone and give his team a chance to go for 3 to tie it up (ed’s note: I’d have to run it in at that distance!). I will say that the XFL handled it a lot better than the NFL would have. Shortly after the game they released a statement saying that Wes Booker, who served as Officiating Supervisor for the game, has been reassigned. With all the screw ups that happen in the NFL they need to start doing more of this. If you can’t do your job we will move you and find someone who can. This should be the new MFL policy for all officials, think about that Jon.

Division 1 Recap

Ataboy vs D#Nasty (19-24)

Let me start by congratulating D#Nasty on their first win of the season. With the win it kept their slim playoffs hopes alive. At the start of the game Ataboy only had 5 players, which sucks, but you need to make sure your team shows up and are ready to go. Both teams played well and to me the big difference was how many balls D#Nasty were able to get their hands on while playing defense. Nick only threw 1 pick, but it could have easily been 3 or 4. I was speaking with Kevin from D#Nasty before the game about how many teams make the playoffs (4) and how many games you need to play in order to be eligible to play in playoffs (5). In order for them to get in they needed to win out and get help, they won, but didn’t get any help. This game came down to the last minute of play. Ataboy were driving and got inside the red zone where Nick threw a pass that Maxime was able to step in front of. Now all D#Nasty needed to do was waste the last few seconds of clock and get a first down to end it. Kevin made a good read with a pass to Alex who gained 9 yards and we’re into 5 plays and Kevin just dumped it off for the first down and that was the game.

Joey’s Lovers vs Les Boys (38-13)

This was a big game for both teams. Joey’s Lovers could lock up a playoff spot and for Les Boys it was the first game against a full squad with a winning record. I’m not sure if I’m more disappointed by how Les Boys played or shocked at how good Joey’s Lovers could be. I’m leaning towards a bit of both and let me explain. Les Boys came out and looked horrible to start the game and in the first half Hugo only completed 4 balls to go with the 2 picks he threw, both to Adam. It wasn’t completely his fault though as he had balls that were well over guy’s heads and also balls that were hitting his receivers right in the hands. Joey’s Lovers capitalized on every mistake that they made. There were a few plays in this one that really stick out to me. Jose made a beautiful catch down the sideline over the shoulder and in stride and was able to stay in bounds and get a few yards after. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the last play of the half. Steve throws it back to Adam who then launches it to Max who catches it in the end zone for 6. Les Boys argued that they got flagged multiple times on the play, but it didn’t matter, it was good. In the second half Joey’s Lovers slowed the game down and walked away with the win.

Power Rankings

#1- Petits Phoques

#2- Henchmen

#3- Les Boys

Les Boys are finally no longer on top, but how long will that last? Joey’s Lovers are looking prime to make it up here before the season is over. In order for that to happen they would need to keep winning and this week they face my number 1 team again. Will all the playoffs spots locked all anyone is doing is fighting for placement and a first round matchup that suits them.

Final Thoughts

With another week down and a few more to go it’s time for teams to start gearing up for playoffs or at least in division 1 since all four teams that will make it know who they are. In division 2 there are four teams fighting for three spots and whoever wants it more will get in. I also want to point out that I won the bet I made with Jon. The bet was size of field. When we play outdoors the field is 25 yards wide and indoors its 31.5 yards wide (ed’s note: it’s 31!). Jon said it was under 30 (ed’s note: 30 or under!), but I knew better and because of that he had to pay up. It’s not a matter of the money that I bring this up, it’s the fact that I know all. I should have included in the bet that Jon would have to refer to me as the all-knowing from now on, but it’s too late for that (ed’s note: doesn’t sound too ‘all knowing’ to me!). This week when you are out there playing, remember it’s a game, so have fun and be safe. Even when you give it your all you can still be safe. Keep that in mind.

Interview with the Mouth: Kyle Lavoie

By now anyone that reads my articles knows that I chose a different player each week and I try to pick a player from a team that hasn’t been represented yet. This week I have picked a player from Sofa King Good and that player is Kyle Lavoie. Kyle is the captain and a pretty nice guy. Now, it’s time for the hard hitting question and we can really find out who he is. Let’s get to the questions.

Q- Growing up what did you do to stay active?

A- Sports, a lot of sports! If we had a ball we made ways to compete. Playing soccer with the fence or basketball off the no parking signs, we spent a lot of time outside enjoying ourselves.

Q- How did you get into flag football and how did you hear about the MFL?

A- All thanks to Tyler. He had the idea and it was Number 2 in the Google searches.

Q- This is your second season in the league; what are the differences from your first season?

A- Understanding the concepts and how to attack on offense which also means we have a better understanding of what we have to defend on the other side of the ball.

Q- You have played in both outdoor and indoor season, which do you prefer? And why?

A- I think I'd go with indoors just because I prefer the time of the games. Being a team of degenerates it gave us time to recover from Friday’s bender.

Q- You are the captain of the team, so how did you form your team? Where did you get the guys from?

A- It was Tyler's suggestion that we should try it out, so for five of us we’re just a mix of cousins and brothers.

Q- Is Sofa King Good going to be a permeant team in the league moving forward?

A- Did you see the sweet ass jerseys we got? I hope so.

Q- You guys have steadily gotten better every week. Why do you think that is?

A- Week by week everyone's finding their role and each week we try to find our advantage and exploit it.

Q- Should your team come back in the spring what division do you see yourselves being in? We will have 4 divisions, 1 being top and 4 being beginners.

A- With our given team if we were to come back in the spring I think we should be a competitive div 2 team.

Q- Last week playing against Primetime when they were only 5 player did you consider playing 5 on 5?

A- Honestly, it happened pretty fast. We wanted to take advantage of the missing guy on the Field expecting a late sub to arrive, but when we finally realized no one was coming it was half time and we just figured we'd play out the game.

Q- You are able to make 1 trade in the division. Who you trading and who you getting? Explain your answer.

A- Trade Brad to ball dropping frenzy for a snickers bar. That guy sucks.

(Kev’s note: Yes, but then if you make that trade who gets to eat the snickers bar?)

Q- What is it going to take for Sofa King Good to win the title this winter?

A- A miracle.

I want to thank Kyle for taking part and good luck the rest of the way.

My Picks Division 1

I’m not sure how I should score last week. I technically did pick both games, but one of them was a last minute forfeit. I will say that I was 100% again since I did pick the Lovers to win. This week is a little tougher, so I actually have to think about it. One thing that is for sure is that someone will get their first win of the season, just trying to figure out who. Here are my picks.

Ataboy vs D#Nasty

I have to go and give it to Ataboy. It was hard since they have guys missing every week. Overall I think they are a way better team than the record shows and they just need to be more consistent at showing up. D#Nasty can very easily win this game, but they will need to eliminate the big mistakes and play their game. The team that wants to win more will win this game, if you come out and play half ass you will lose and if this goes to OT you guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

Joey’s Lovers vs Les Boys

I had to go with Les Boys since I know a little secret about this game. Joey’s Lovers are a decent team that can win in most games, but with them being very top heavy the lower players will hurt them in this one. Les Boys are too strong of a team to lose this one they have an all the right pieces and are very hard to stop. Sorry, Snowflake, you and your team are taking the L.

Word from the Mouth: Free Football for Life edition!

You can all see the weather is starting to get nicer and nicer outside. If it stays like this maybe we can start the spring season earlier than normal. This upcoming spring season will be the first with player and team ratings. Over the weekend a few players and league representatives got together and talked about a few issues with the league and the changes that are coming. We also did the draw for free football for life and Katy from Gold Rush won, so congratulations (ed’s note: what enthusiasm!).  We only have a few weeks left in the season and playoffs are taking place April 4th and the 11th, so everyone needs to be ready for that and make sure you show up.

Division 1 Recap

Henchmen vs Petit Phoques (8-18)

This game was cut to 20 minutes halves so that they were able to finish the game from last time. I will say that those 4 minutes might have helped the Henchmen in this one, but it’s a good thing they weren’t played. Last time these two teams meet it was all offense, there was not one stop by either team. This time it was all around defense. Both teams had difficulties moving the ball and no one could punch it in. Jon did what he needed to going for it on fourth and ten in his own half being down by a few with little time left. He knew he needed to score to get the lead and put pressure on Petits Phoques, but he couldn’t pull it off and the ball was turned over. With less than a minute left Dom threw a little pass to Étienne who was able to walk into the end zone and seal the game.

OT (28-27) Henchmen

Let me start by saying the reason why we are playing this is there was an injury that prevented the game to end last time. Now let me go over the rules of OT the team that starts with the ball must go for 1 and if they get it the other team must go for 2, if they don’t get it the second team can go for 1 and end the game. With all that said you think it would be simple right? Well, this went back and forth with multiple plays being made on defense. The biggest play had to come from Ian when the ball was passed to someone on Petits Phoques in the end zone, hitting him in his hands and it looks as if he is going to catch it and at the last second there is a slight bobble and Ian was able to punch it out. That would have been the game. A few plays later Petits Phoques were able to score and it looked like that would be it. Henchmen got the ball back and somehow Ian was able to find a wide open hole in the end zone and Jon was able to get him the ball and the 2 points and the win.

Joey’s Lovers vs D#Nasty (NA)

Game was forfeited by D#Nasty earlier on in the day since they weren’t going to have enough players. Joey’s lovers still got to play, but it was just against a bunch of subs. This is why I am not talking about this game.

Power Rankings

#1- Les Boys

#2- Petits Phoques

#3- Henchmen

Just like the last few weeks I had to flip flop the 2 and 3 spot. No one really seems to be able to hold on to that spot. Can Joey’s Lovers win a few big games and force their way up on my top 3. I have heard people say that Les Boys haven’t beaten anyone, and while that is true, they have beaten everyone that has played on the same field as them. That is those people opinions and here all that matters is mine. They are the best team until someone beats them that’s it that’s all. Prove me wrong.

Final Thoughts

We are just a few short weeks from the playoffs and now is the time to make sure everyone is in line and knows what is expected of them. To qualify for the playoffs you have to play in 5 season games, captains you might want to check and make sure. Also the Commissioner will be paying me out on a bet he is going to lose and I will be pointing it out in each one of my articles that he should be removed of all his power and it should go into the players hands. Ok, we all know that it will never happen in this league. The NFL is looking to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement or CBA that from the looks of it might get turned down and a strike could be coming. I wonder if the owners will do what they did in 1987 and bring in replacement players. I hope not, cause that would be crap just like it was then. We could start sending NFL teams Ben’s plays of the week videos and some of us might get a shot. Just remember we are playing a game for fun so be safe and enjoy yourself.

Interview with the Mouth: Dave Daoust

I’d like to welcome everyone back for another read. Each week it’s getting harder and harder to decide who to pick to interview, I always like to mix up the divisions, pick someone who played the previous week, and try and get someone from a different team. Since I haven’t interviewed anyone from Honor Game so far, so I decided to pick their QB, Dave Daoust. If you play in division 2 and don’t know who he is, where have you been hiding? He is the man under center and is leading in every passing category. Let’s get to it and see what he has to say.

Q- Are you and your team really having fun dominating in Division 2?

A- Anytime you're playing football it's fun, win lose or draw. If it's not fun anymore, you need to find a new hobby. We all (Honor Game) love the game, it's in our name, and we have a good bunch of guys who are all great to play with. There is a great team vibe with us with no drama. We go out to have fun, get better and be competitive, but we focus on competing more so versus ourselves on a game to game basis as opposed to versus our opponent.  While we may be 9-0, we are humbled in that we know there is still so much more for us to work on as a team to get better. Grinding and working toward becoming a better football team on a weekly basis will always be my favorite way of having fun... And I don't think we've hit our state of dominance yet, our prime is ahead of us.

Q- Who is Honor Games biggest threat to winning the title this season?

A- The teams in this division are getting better every week! I do feel as though Primetime is the most athletic opponent we have dealt with and they need some props for their ability to go up and get the ball on D. Ball Dropping Frenzy was our smartest opponent thus far, making good adjustments during the game and finding some matchups here and there. They'll find a clever way to a win a game one of these weeks. Really, every team is improving, starting to find out who they are and building on that. Our team is very focused on bringing home the championship and we made sure to make that statement with our first 9 games. I believe our biggest threat to winning it all this season is ourselves. We need to stay poised, focused and make sure we don't beat ourselves. We need to let our opponent make their mistakes and capitalize on them, and stay Honor Game. (pun intended)

Q- Do you think that this team could compete in division 1?

A- If you asked me this question week 1, I would've told you most definitely not. With these 9 games under our belt, I think we could definitely hold our own versus a Division 1 team now. We have had the time to work on our chemistry and rhythm, and have installed a system on offense and defense. It's tough to play Division 1 without integrating as a team first. Maybe after we win this D2 championship, we can organize a game of D1 champs vs D2 champs and find out!? Jon book it! (ed’s note: spring tryout day maybe!) We got a month-long bye; we're going to be starving for football when we get back.

Q- You have played in the summer and won a title as a receiver. Would it be more satisfying to winning it as a passer?

A- Winning last year felt great. Our team worked hard, played hard and put out, game in and out. We put every big win behind us, and went into the next game just as hungry as the last. That's what it takes to win consistently. While it was my first MFL championship, I have won championships in other leagues prior as a WR. When we win this season, it will be my first championship as a quarterback so it will surely have a special place up there for me. More importantly though, there are a couple of guys on our team that have never won a championship yet who have played many seasons, so the most satisfying part of winning this season will be winning with them and getting to share that championship feeling, being a part of their first chip.

Q- Do you prefer throwing or catching a TD?

A- Trick question? I prefer throwing the TD and catching the TD on the same play, but it’s kind of hard to pull off and I haven't quite mastered the Mariota special yet. Haha! Seriously, 85% of the time, I would rather throw the TD... but when you get one of those sideline toe-tapping snags nobody thinks you're coming down with, there's no better feeling than that!

Q- What made you decide to throw this season? Is it to prove that you can? And any chance you play QB in the summer?

A- I love playing QB. It's a very challenging position. I like to think I was always good at football, but I was a horrible thrower of the football my entire life so I made a point to try and get better. Like I tell everyone on my team every week, the most important part of every game is getting better as a player and as a team, and I lead into that with what I've done with this position over time. I'm still learning, I don't think you can ever stop learning. It's new and different from all the years of safety, corner, WR... and I'm getting old so less running is less painful the next day. I only asked to play QB or sub in at QB all Fall season long!! If it was up to me, I would play QB every MFL season! I love what Jon and the guys have done with this league, it's very fun to be a part of.

Q- You have a few brothers that all have play football, who is the best out of the bunch? And what makes that person the best.

A- I couldn't tell you, honestly. I know all of us really well and I am dead honest when I tell you bizarrely, all of our skills are extremely different. Devin is the fastest and most agile. Derek is the biggest, and was an amazing big slot WR who can make short and deep plays and post up vs anyone. Dilan is a beast in the short game on defense and also plays a great big man on offense, dominating his defender with body and solid hands. I get by being the smartest (don't tell them that though), I'm sneaky on the field with reading the opponent and getting in the soft spots of zones, have a real feel for it. We all have great hands and ability to track the ball, to go with a family inheritance of the infamous flag football spin move. My hands are the best of the bunch but not one of them would ever admit it, and I don't blame them.

Q- Are you surprised that no one has picked up on the play you run often on converts?

A- I'm not surprised. There's more to it than you have seen. The day someone does what they need to do in coverage on one side, they will see that it exposes them on the other side. Come cover it, I dare you. You haven’t seen that plays full potential yet; we haven’t hit option 2 or 3 because of what the coverage has dictated. I'll be surprised the day someone does stop it consistently, it’s a couple years old now and well tested.

Q- I know you are a Giants fan, Terry is a Cowboys fan, and your brother is an Eagles fan. Do you have a Redskins fan on the roster? If not, you need to find one.

A- Come gameday, our fanhood goes to the side and we are all simply Honor Game. There are no distractions over which NFL team we root for. Today isn't gameday though... Both Terry and Devin have horrible taste in NFL franchises and need to come bleed blue.

Cowboys and Eagles suck (ed’s note: this is scientific fact). The famous Philly special had an illegal formation of only 6 men on the LOS that wasn't called somehow, and people think this is the best play in Eagles history... yeah, it’s the worst play in stripes history. I'm not sure Terry was alive the last time the Cowboys were relevant, he runs like he's only 21 years old. Thankfully there are no Redskins fans on the team, and let’s keep it that way.

Q- With you being the captain and forming the team why did you only bring one brother with you? You could have been team Daoust.

A- Ahh the good old PRIMETIME days. Our team for the longest time was PRIMETIME and other teams used to joke that with only 1 ball and 4 Daousts there weren’t enough balls to go around for all of us, which was kind of true, so we came up with a slogan; ‘Ain't no I in Team, but there are 2 "I"s and 2 "ME"s in PRIMETIME’. My brother Derek has been trying to recover from a torn ACL for 2 years now. He had surgery a year ago, but the ligament stretched and he is waiting to redo it. Really sucks. Hopefully he's patched up and back out soon. My brother Dilan is a great player, but we wanted to be fair with Div 2 and not over-stack the team. If all 4 brothers were on the same team, we would've surely had to enroll in Div 1. We have played so many seasons all 4 brothers on 1 team. There wasn't pressure to build another. We are also a bunch of crazies on the football field together. You know how they say 3 is a crowd and 4 is a party? Yeah... we party hard. As brothers, I think our favorite game was a playoff game in another league where we squared up 2 Daousts on 1 team, and 2 Daousts on another. The game came down to the final 3 plays and Derek ended up catching the game winning TD on a 4th down and goal, booting Dilan and I out the playoffs. We all played major roles for our team in that game. It was pretty cool! Maybe one day MFL will see all 4 brother's rockin it together again, but if so, Jon's going to have to up season rates to include additional referees and security fees.

I want to thank you Dave for taking part and good luck the rest of the season and into the playoffs.

My Picks Division 1

I ended up getting both games wrong last week, which shouldn’t have happened, but I listen to what JC had told me and I had to figure Dom wanted revenge after last time they played each other. This week I won’t be listen to anyone or taking revenge into play when I make my picks this way I can get back to picking the winners. Here are my picks and this week’s winners.

Henchmen vs Petit Phoques

I like both the rosters and I could have gone either way on this one, but I picked Petits Phoques because they won’t lose two games in a row. This week their roster will show up and they will show who they are against another top team. I see this being a tight game and the team that gets more converts will win. Speaking of converts they have to play an overtime shoot out to finish off the game from a few weeks ago, so this is almost a two for one game.

Joey’s Lovers vs D#Nasty

I hate to keep picking against D#Nasty, but they just don’t seem to fit well with the larger field. They are all solid players that are having a hard time getting to the sidelines and dropping deep consistently. I feel that with the experience that Joey’s Lovers have they should be able to win this one without breaking a sweet. Even after writing that it wouldn’t shock me to see D#Nasty get their first win of the season.

Word from the Mouth: Be On Time! edition

Word from the Mouth: Be On Time! edition

As most of you have probably noticed, the weather is getting nicer outside which means spring is approaching. Though it might seem too early to be thinking about the next season since we still have 5 weeks left plus playoffs. I prefer the outdoor season, personally. I enjoy working on my tan and the lighting sucks indoors. Some of the teams are almost eliminated, but hanging on by a thread, you might want to think about joining in spring, just like winter all games are played Saturday during the day, the time slots and location(s) have not yet been confirmed, but we will keep you posted (ed’s note: for Saturday same timeslots as last year, but potentially playing at Le Ber and La Verendrye, Sunday league should be the same except likely with two games going simultaneously). One other quick note for everyone is to get your team there early and ready to go at the proper start time. It sucks when one team is there and ready to go and the other team hasn’t even arrived yet. I understand that finding parking sucks, so give yourself extra time to do that (ed’s note: park on De Maisonneuve!).

Division 1 Recap

Ataboy vs Les Boys (18-31)

This was the game that Ataboys needed to win, make a statement and, from what JC had said, start them on the way to winning out and making the playoffs. In the beginning both teams were feeling each other out and were forced to punt. Then Les Boys started to roll, scoring on every possession after that. There were two big turning points in the game the first one was right after they scored their first TD. Dominic stepped in front of Nicolas pass and took in back for 6. The other was the one that makes you wonder how can a defense allow this to happen. With 5 plays left you allow the team to score, but not by working the field, but by a big play for 32 yards, followed by a 9 yard score. I understand playing a little softer, but you can’t give up the big plays. Bend don’t break. Battle of the Boys goes to Les Boys. Will there be a third matchup between these two teams? Possible, but Ataboy needs to win a game first.

Les Boys vs Petit Phoques (32-13)

This was supposed to be a battle of top teams, but it wasn’t. Petits Phoques showed up without a QB so Vince filled in and let’s be honest, he isn’t Dom. I was hoping to see a full squad from Petits Phoques. Guess that will have to wait for the playoffs. Les Boys controlled the tempo of the game taking long drives followed by quick stops on defense. Vince only made one mistake throwing the ball which was a great pick by Pierre, he did make a few questionable decisions in the game like going for it on fourth downs. So, the score was lopsided and as you can see both of Petits Phoques scores came late in the game. One was a good run by Vince where he made three players miss tackles and could have been flagged after the score for spiking the ball and the other score really shouldn’t have counted since we were down to five plays, but Les Petits Phoques were allowed to have one play where Vince chucked it up and Alexis caught it and ran into the end zone for six (ed’s note: it was all legit. They were at 6 plays for that play, so the game was going to be called after the play no matter what, but it was meant to be played!). This game wasn’t close and Petits Phoques seem to be pulling a Gros Coqs move and not all showing up until playoffs, where they will show up and dominate.

Power Rankings

#1- Les Boys

#2- Henchmen

#3- Petits Phoques

The top is staying at the top while I flip the two and the three around. Right now these are the three top teams by far. We have two teams that are winless and will eventually play each other. Joey’s lovers will need to do a lot of winning if they ever want to make it up right now they have a losing record and have only beaten a team still searching for their first win.

Final Thoughts

Everyone needs to decide if they are here to have fun or win a championship (ed’s note: I feel like it can be both…). Now is the time. You all have a few weeks left to get on track and figure it out. First and foremost, you need to show up early and be ready to start on time. This week we had two games start late since we were waiting on players. We also had teams that players didn’t show up for and not only does it make it hard for me to predict and do my power rankings, we also never get to see those real teams play each other. I know sometimes things come up, but get your priorities straight. It goes football then everything else. Just kidding, you’re allowed to have a life and somethings are more important than a game. So always remember to come out, have fun, and be safe.
